NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s Hannah Tuomi was lauded Monday as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for her play against a pair of highly ranked league opponents last week.
In Thursday’s win against No. 12/11 Georgia, Tuomi scored 10 of the Commodores’ 14 points as VU held Georgia scoreless for 9:10 and opened up a 38-21 halftime lead. A native of Thornton, Colo., Tuomi finished the game with a career-high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
Tuomi then posted her first career double-double against a record crowd at No. 2 Tennessee on Sunday. She scored in double-figures for the fourth time in six games and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
The Horizon High School product moved into the Commodores’ starting lineup at the beginning of the 2008 calendar year, and has made the most of her opportunity. In six games as a starter, she is averaging 10.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Vanderbilt (13-6, 2-2 SEC) is currently enjoying a bye week before returning to Memorial Gymnasium on Sunday, Jan. 27, when Ole Miss visits for a 2 p.m. CT tip-off.
All tickets to the Ole Miss game will go for one dollar ($1), and the Commodores will offer free headbands for the first 1,000 fans who “jam the gym.” Other activities surrounding the game include mascot basketball at halftime and a postgame clinic and autograph session.
