Jan. 18, 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swimming and diving team hits the road for its final regular season SEC meet this weekend as it travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the Arkansas Lady `Backs at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

“We’re excited to get one last SEC competition before conference championships in about a month,” Vanderbilt head coach Jeremy Organ said. “I think everyone is excited and ready to put up our best against theirs and we’ll see what happens.”

The Commodores (0-7 in dual meets) are coming off a home dual meet loss to Miami (FL). Freshman Leigh-Ann Axt (Plano, Texas) led the Commodores with her 12th individual race win of the year, capturing the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.94. Axt also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly.

Freshman Jennifer Molchan (Pensacola, Fla.) also had an impressive meet, recording second-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Molchan also finished third in the 200-yard freestyle. Fellow freshman Rachel Dyer (Chattanooga, Tenn.) recorded a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 10:49.09.

Arkansas enters the meet with a 6-2 dual meet record and 0-2 record in conference meets. The Lady `Backs are led by junior Stephanie Carr. Carr posted two victories last weekend against Missouri and Missouri State, claiming victories in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1000-yard freestyle. Her time of 9:54.08 in the 1000 freestyle was the second-best time in school history.

“They’re a real strong and real deep team,” Organ said. “They did a real good job of recruiting last year. Those girls are performing really well this year. Their looking to make a move in the conference at the end of the season.”
