NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 16 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team hits the road for the first time in 2008, traveling to Albuquerque, N.M., for matches against New Mexico on Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) and Colorado on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST).

“We play good teams on the road in their place,” head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “They’re used to altitude. It’s going to be a lot of fun to go to New Mexico. Both teams are really good in their respective conferences. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Vanderbilt enters the weekend with a 1-0 record after sweeping UT-Martin 7-0 in the season opener on Wednesday. The Commodores used strong play in both singles and doubles as they only lost eight games throughout the entire match.

New Mexico opens the season ranked No. 67 by the ITA. Last season, the Lobos finished with a 12-11 overall record and a 4-4 mark in Mountain West Conference play. New Mexico returns seven letterwinners from that team. Freshman Sandra Zmak is the only Lobo ranked in singles in the initial ITA rankings, coming in at No. 85.

Colorado is ranked No. 38 to start the season. The Buffaloes finished 2007 with an overall record of 16-8 and 9-2 in the Big 12, good for a tie of third place. Colorado brings eight letterwinners back from last year’s squad, including senior Gleisy Torres Torres who finished last year with a 25-9 singles record.
