NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team plays host to No. 12/11 Georgia Thursday night at Memorial Gymnasium. The game, scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. CT, will be broadcast regionally by Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS).
The Commodores split their opening week of Southeastern Conference games, defeating Mississippi State at home last Thursday before falling at No. 10 LSU on Sunday.
Sunday’s loss was the Commodores’ first defeat of the new year. In the first four contests of calendar year 2008, Vanderbilt has boasted a balanced scoring attack that has seen seven Commodores score in double-figures at least once.
Sophomore Merideth Marsh scored game-high totals against South Florida, Princeton and Mississippi State before being held scoreless at LSU. Sophomore Jessica Mooney led the Commodores in that game, with 15 points.
Senior Liz Sherwood continues to lead Head Coach Melanie Balcomb’s Commodores in scoring despite coming off bench for the past four games. Sherwood leads the nation in field-goal percentage, connecting on 71.7 percent of her shot attempts this year.
Senior Tasha Humphrey leads the Lady Bulldogs for the fourth consecutive season, averaging 16.1 points and nine rebounds per game. Sophomores Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson are also averaged double-figures for Andy Lander’s squad. The 14-2 Lady Bulldogs are coming off a 82-52 road loss at No. 20 Auburn.
Thursday’s game will support the United Way as part of the “Baskets for Benefits” promotion aimed at supporting local chapters of nation-wide charities during the 2007-08 Commodore women’s basketball season. Fans can download a form from Vanderbilt’s official athletics web site (http://vucommodores.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/baskets-for-benefits.html) and pledge donations for every free throw that the Commodores make in Thursday’s games.
Upcoming Baskets for Benefits charities include the American Heart Association (Feb. 7 vs. South Carolina) and the Susan G. Komen Foundation/Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (annual PINK OUT, Feb. 14 vs. Kentucky).
Thirteen-year veteran Charlie Mattos provides the call on WNSR-560 AM, while the tandem of Chris Stewart and Robin Muller will be the featured broadcasters on CSS.
