NASHVILLE – #12/13 Vanderbilt opens the SEC road portion of the schedule this Saturday when the Commodores take on Kentucky in a regionally televised game on CBS at 12:30 CT. Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson will have the call on the Vanderbilt/ISP Radio Network.

Vanderbilt, one of only five unbeaten teams in college basketball, enters the game with a 16-0 record after defeating South Carolina, 80-73, Wednesday night in their SEC opener at Memorial Gym. Playing in front of a sell out crowd at home, the Commodores held off the feisty Gamecocks with clutch three-point shooting and a strong second half from VU freshman A.J. Ogilvy, who scored 21 of his game-high 25 points in the second stanza.

After South Carolina had cut the lead to two at 71-69, Vanderbilt scored five straight points over the next 1:10 to take a 76-69 lead. Senior Alex Gordon knocked down a crucial three to stretch the lead to five at 74-69. Vanderbilt made all six of their free throw attempts in the last 35 seconds to seal the game.

Vanderbilt continued its proficiency from the foul line, knocking down 15-of-17 (88.2 percent) from the charity stripe, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line in the final minutes of the game. For the season, Vanderbilt is shooting 79-of-103 (76.7 percent) from the free-throw line in the last three minutes of the game.

Vanderbilt senior Shan Foster, the league’s leading scorer at 20.6 points per game, made two threes against the Gamecocks Wednesay en route to 13 points, and surpassed the Commodore career record for made threes in a career. He passed all-time VU great, Ronnie McMahan and currently has 298 three-pointers in his stellar four-year career.

Vanderbilt and Kentucky will meet for the 169th time Saturday afternoon, with the Wildcats holding a 128-40 advantage in the series. However, the Commodores have won four consecutive games over Kentucky, dating back to a 57-52 win over the Wildcats at Rupp Arena on January 10, 2006. Kentucky holds a 74-14 advantage in Lexington.

The Wildcats enter the game with a 6-7 overall record, and will open their SEC schedule on Saturday.

Freshman Patrick Patterson leads Kentucky in scoring and rebounding at 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, respectively. Joe Crawford adds 13.1 points per game, while Ramel Bradley (14.8) and Jodie Meeks (10.8) each add double digit points for the Wildcats.

Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie is in his first season in Lexington and is in his sixth season overall as a head coach. He has a 106-65 overall record.

Foster and Ogilvy rank one and two, respectively, in scoring in the Southeastern Conference as of January 11. Foster pours in 20.6 points per contest, while Ogilvy adds 19.6 points per game, and leads all SEC freshmen. Only one pair of teammates have finished first and second in the league in scoring, and that came when Tennessee’s Ernie Grunfeld led the SEC with 25.3 ppg in 1975-76 with Bernard King second at 25.2 ppg.

Tip off from Rupp Arena is at 12:30 p.m. CT.
