PRINCETON, N.J. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team closes out its 2007-08 non-conference slate with a road game at Princeton on Saturday at Jadwin Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.

The Commodores (10-4) opened the new year with a convincing win over South Florida at home on Wednesday. Sophomore guard Merideth Marsh led four Commodores in double-figures, scoring a career-high 19 points on 5-of-5 shooting from behind-the-arc.

Freshman Hannah Tuomi made the most of her first career start, scoring a career-high 11 points and coming down with nine rebounds. The Commodores started two freshmen in the lineup, including point guard Jence Rhoads, for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

Vanderbilt opens its 14-game Southeastern Conference schedule next Thursday, Jan. 10, when Mississippi State visits Nashville’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Saturday’s game is a homecoming for a number of Commodores, including Head Coach Melanie Balcomb. Balcomb grew up just miles from Princeton’s campus and played basketball at nearby Trenton State (now the College of New Jersey). Balcomb’s father, Alan, spent time as an assistant coach at Princeton under the legendary Pete Carril.

Assistant coaches Vicky Picott and Lisa Cermignano are also from New Jersey, while video coordinator Clare Droesch and freshman guard Chanel Chisholm hail from neighboring New York.

Princeton (3-12) is also closing its non-conference schedule before heading into Ivy League play next Saturday against Penn. The Tigers are hoping to end a six-game losing skid that has included games against California, Rutgers and Syracuse. Princeton is led by senior forward Meagan Cowher, daughter of former Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Bill Cowher. She is averaging 18.2 points and nearly eight rebounds per game.
