NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tia Gibbs, a 5-10 guard from Lousiville, Ky., signed a National Letter of Intent to become the second member of Vanderbilt’s 2008 women’s basketball recruiting class, Head Coach Melanie Balcomb announced Thursday.
“Tia is a complete guard,” Balcomb said. “She has great shooting range, is very quick on the drive and can see the court extremely well.”
Gibbs, rated the 78th best prospect in the nation by the All-Star Girls Report, is already the all-time leading scorer at Butler Traditional High School. She has earned All-Region honors from the Courier-Journal three times in her prep career, becoming a first-team All-State pick following her junior season.
Making her mark as an eighth grader on a Bearettes’ squad that advanced to the state semfinals, Gibbs has developed into a premier performer. She averaged over 20 points per game last season on her way to being named Sixth Region Player of the Year.
“Tia comes an excellent high school program,” Balcomb added. “And we’re excited to have another player of her caliber coming to Vanderbilt.”
Gibbs is the fourth Kentucky All-State player to sign with the Commodores since 2000, joining current sophomores Merideth Marsh (Christina Academy) and Amber Norton (Assumption), and former Commodore great Jenni Benningfield (Assumption).
