NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt freshman A.J. Ogilvy was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for his 18-point, nine-rebound performance in the Commodores’ 81-67 win over Austin Peay Saturday evening.
Ogilvy’s selection marks the first time since the SEC began the award in the 2005-06 season that a Commodore freshman has received the accolade. The SEC had a Rookie of the Week award from 1987-1992, and two Commodores received that honor – Charles Mayes in the week of January 18-24, 1988, and Ronnie McMahan in the week of February 3-9, 1992.
Ogilvy’s 18-point collegiate debut was the most for a Vanderbilt freshman since Phil Cox scored 30 points to open his college career at Duke in a game the Commodores won 76-75 in double overtime to begin the 1981-82 campaign. Ogilvy barely missed a double-double in his first career outing, bringing down nine rebounds, and the Australian native was 6-of-9 from the field and added two blocked shots and a steal.
Ogilvy and the rest of his Vanderbilt teammates take on Toledo Tuesday evening in Toledo. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. CT from Savage Hall.
