Women’s Basketball Season Tickets Start at $25
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Junior Christina Wirth and senior Liz Sherwood were honored Thursday as the Southeastern Conference unveiled its fourth annual women’s basketball preseason All-SEC first and second teams.
Wirth earned first-team All-SEC honors, while Sherwood was named to the conference’s second team. Coaches also voted on a predicted order of finish, overall champion and a preseason Player of the Year. Vanderbilt was picked to finish fourth overall in the league.
Tennessee was predicted to win its 15th Southeastern Conference women’s basketball championship, with LSU, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Auburn and Kentucky rounding out the top half of the league.
Mississippi State came in at seven, while Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama rounded out the bottom half of the conference.
Tennessee junior Candace Parker was the choice for SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year with eight votes, followed by LSU’s Sylvia Fowles with three votes and Georgia’s Tasha Humphrey with one vote. Joining Parker, Humphrey and Fowles on the All-SEC First Team were Arkansas’ Lauren Ervin, Auburn’s DeWanna Bonner, LSU’s Erica White, Tennessee’s Nicky Anosike and Alexis Hornbuckle, and Vanderbilt’s Wirth.
Second team consists of Florida’s Sha Brooks and Marshae Dotson, Georgia’s Ashley Houts, Kentucky’s Sarah Elliott and Samantha Mahoney, LSU’s Quianna Chaney, Mississippi State’s Imesia Jackson, Tennessee’s Shannon Bobbitt and Vanderbilt’s Liz Sherwood. Auburn’s Whitney Boddie and Sherell Hobbs, Florida’s Depree Bowden, Georgia’s Megan Darrah, Kentucky’s Carly Ormerod, Mississippi State’s Alexis Rack and Marneshia Richards, Ole Miss’ Alliesha Easley, and South Carolina’s Demetress Adams and Lakesha Tolliver also received votes.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team or players. The 2007-08 season begins November 6, with conference play set to begin January 10. A complete listing of all honors follows.
