SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Rising Vanderbilt junior Jon Curran needed 19 holes to advance past the first round of match play Wednesday in the United States Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club.
Curran found himself three-up with four holes to play before 2007 Washington graduate Alex Prugh tied the match by birdying the 18th hole. Prugh would bogey the next hole while Curran carded a birdie to take the narrow victory.
The Round of 32 will begin on Thursday morning, with Curran facing Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas. The pairing is scheduled to tee off at 8:20 a.m. PT.
Another Commodore, sophomore Chris Rockwell, ended his run at the U.S. Amateur on Wednesday afternoon. Former Arizona Wildcat Nathan Tyler defeated Rockwell, 4 and 2, to advance to Thursday’s action.
