Nashville, Tenn. – The inexperienced prospects on Vanderbilt’s football squad were the focus of a 30-minute situational scrimmage Wednesday evening at the John Rich Practice Facility.
Head Coach Bobby Johnson used the second of two sessions on Wednesday to take a close look at several players likely to be counted on to provide much-needed depth to a Vanderbilt squad that returns 17 position starters from a year ago. Afterward, Johnson gave mixed reviews on the scrimmage.
“We had a mixture in there and a lot of those guys haven’t played together. One mistake here or there has an impact,” Johnson said. “But I thought our guys were competing out there, trying to get better. We’re just trying to get them more experience.”
The scrimmage session was the first in two days for the Commodores, who continue to practice through the worst heat wave to hit the region in years. It also concluded the team’s second two-a-day practice.
Aside from several positive rushes and two touchdowns from redshirt freshman tailback Kennard Reeves and a tough catch in traffic by sophomore receiver Alex Washington, the defense appeared to have the upper hand during the session.
Among the defensive highlights included an interception by cornerback Myron Lewis and a pass deflection by cornerback Josh Allen. Sophomore linebacker Brandon Bryant was in on several plays while freshman linebacker John Stokes made a solid tackle in the open field. Johnson also praised the play of the team’s young defensive end prospects, including Theron Kadri, Tim Fugger and Reilly Lauer.
The Commodores was expected to return to the field Thursday afternoon for a lone session, and conduct their third two-a-day practice on Friday.
Flagship Station 104.5 Schedules Vanderbilt Day on Thursday
Nashville’s most popular afternoon radio show, “The SportsZone” on Vanderbilt flagship station 104.5 “The Zone” will air its show this afternoon from practice. The show starts at 2 p.m., with Darren McFarland hosted the opening hour.
Co-hosts George Plaster and Willy Daunic will talk with Coach Johnson, Vanderbilt interim Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos, Vice Chancellor of University Affairs David Williams and former Vanderbilt chancellor Gordon Gee among others during the afternoon.
Season Ticket Sales Break 14,000 Mark
Vanderbilt athletics officials announced Wednesday that more than 14,000 season tickets have been sold for the upcoming season, the highest single-season sales total in nearly a decade. Less than 800 season tickets remain for sale, according to ticket office officials, who are selling about 100 season tickets daily.
