Concolino Posts Tie on Second Day of USA-Japan Matches

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. — Japan extended its lead to 10 points in the second round of the 32nd Annual Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Kevin Chappell started the day off with a one stroke loss to Japan’s Kentaro Shibata, but Rob Grube pulled through for the U.S. with a 70-76 win over Ryutaro Nagano. Team USA’s Gary Woodland was defeated 66-74 by the new tournament leader, Yuta Ikeda. Kenichi Sawada managed a seven stroke victory over America’s Bronson Burgoon while Stephen Goodridge was taken down by Yohei Nakamichi of Japan. Daisuke Yasumoto broadened the Japanese’s lead with a win over Chris McCartin, 68-73. Japan’s Yuta Taniyama suffered a seven shot loss to previous tournament leader, Jarin Todd while Yuki Usami took the final men¹s match against Daniel Mitchell of the U.S, 69-76.

The women ended the day with a win and three split matches. Alison Walshe carded a 69 to defeat Eriko Kobashi of Japan while Selanee Henderson tied with Hiroko Ayada at 76. Jennie Lee also split her match at even par with Japan’s Eriko Koyama. Jacqui Concolino finished the day at 1-over to tie with Eriko Kobashi, bringing the score to 23-13 in favor of Japan.

The final round will begin on Friday at 8:00AM PDT. The women will lead off the day with Concolino matching up against Ayada and Koyama facing America’s Henderson. Walshe is set to play Kobashi of Japan as Takeda takes on Jennie Lee of the U.S.

Team USA’s Grube will meet Taniyama and Usami will compete with Bronson Burgoon. Jarin Todd will go head to head against Nakamichi, Chappell will play Yasumoto while Goodridge will tee it up with Japan’s Shibata. Nagano will match up with America’s Mitchell and McCartin will go against Ikeda of Japan. The final match will feature Gary Woodland of the U.S. versusJapan’s Kenichi Sawada.
