RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. -Â Team Japan took a four-point lead over the Americans in round one of the 32nd Annual Fuji Xerox USA vs. JapanCollegiate Golf Championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho SantaMargarita, Calif.
The Japanese women took both matches with Eriko Koyama and Mami Takedadefeating Selanee Henderson and Jennie Lee of the U.S. by nine strokes.Hiroko Ayada and Erko Kobashi of Japan won their match against America¹sJacqui Concolino and Alison Walshe by five shots.
Japan maintained its lead with Bronson Burgoon and Kevin Chappell fallingshort of Japan¹s Yuta Taniyama and Yuki Usami by two strokes. Yuta Ikeda,who posted an under-par round of 67, along with Daisuke Yasumoto, won their match over Chris McCartin and Daniel Mitchell of Team USA. The U.S.finished the day by winning its last two matches. Jarin Todd of the U.S.posted the lowest round of the day, finishing with a 7-under 65. Todd,along with Stephen Goodridge, defeated the Japanese team of Ryutaro Naganoand Kentaro Shibata. American¹s Rob Grube and Gary Woodland completed theday¹s matches with a one-stroke victory over Yohei Nakamichi and KenichiSawada.
The men will lead off the second day of competition with Kevin Chappelltaking on Japan’s Kentaro Shibata and Ryutaro Nagano facing Rob Grube of the U.S. America¹s Gary Woodland will go head to head against Yuta Ikeda as Kenichi Sawada plays Bronson Burgoon of Team USA. Stephen Goodridge will play Japan¹s Yohei Nakamichi and Chris McCartin of the U.S. will match up against Daisuke Yasumoto. The final group of men will feature tournament leader Jarin Todd against Yuta Taniyama and Yuki Usami of Japan versus Daniel Mitchell.
Alison Walshe will face Japan¹s Eriko Kobashi for the women as Team USA¹sSelanee Henderson plays Hiroko Ayada. The final matches will include Jennie Lee of the U.S. against Eriko Koyama and Mami Takeda of Japan will take on America’s Jacqui Concolino.
The second round of the competition is scheduled to take place on Thursdaywith tee times starting at 8:00 AM PDT.
