DECATUR, Ala. — Rising sophomore Hudson Johnson won the 40th Annual Spirit of America Classic by three strokes after shooting a final-round 68 on Sunday at the par-71, 7,111-yard Burningtree Country Club.

In third place after three rounds, Johnson went three-under on Sunday to jump ahead of Ole Miss’ Kyle Ellis and Tennessee Tech’s John Fox.

Johnson began the first round with four bogeys on the first 11 holes before righting the ship to finish with a two-over 73. Friday’s second round of five-under included an eagle and five birdies. Johnson would go four-under on Saturday before bringing home the title of Sunday.

A native of Longview, Texas, Johnson competed in seven events for the Commodores as a freshman last season. Vanderbilt opens the 2007-08 season on September 14 with the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic in Dalton, Georgia.
