Former Vanderbilt Commodore Derrick Byars was one of four Philadelphia 76ers introduced to the Philadelphia media Saturday at a postdraft news conference. The 2007 SEC Player of the Year, Byars was traded to the 76ers after being selected as the 42nd overall pick by the Portland Trailblazers in the second round of Thursday’s NBA Draft.
Below are quotes from Byars as well as a link to the 76ers web site for additional news conference quote’s and audio.
On whether he knew the Sixers plan…
“I didn’t have any clue. I was watching the draft and anticipating the next name called and they made their choice and I’m glad to be here.”
On whether he was disappointed at not going in the first round…
“Honestly, somewhat. I can’t worry about that. I can’t worry about things I can’t control. Like I said, I’m happy my name did get called among 60 names.”
Regarding his best position…
“I think I can do well anywhere on the court, the two, three, anywhere on the perimeter. I think that’s where my game is best suited. I feel I bring versatility in that area.”
On initial impressions of the Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith in the workout…
“Jason and Thaddeus were in the same workout I was in. They are great players, obviously. Jason is an agile big man. He can step out and shoot it and I’m looking forward to playing with him. Thaddeus I know a lot about, he is from my hometown. He is an incredible player.”
On being from the same area as Rodney Carney…
“I’m familiar with him as well, and I’m looking forward to being here with him.”
Regarding the current 76ers team…
“It’s no secret that the wings here are the strength of the team. I feel I can bring more depth, maturity and experience to that position.”
On transferring schools…
“It allowed me to excel on the court and off the court. I was able to better my college experience as a whole. Vanderbilt was a more enjoyable experience and the transfer made that possible. I feel my presence there allowed the school more national recognition that they probably hadn’t received before. It allowed us to become closer as a team and allowed outsiders to notice us.”
On the draft…
“As I said before, I’m here, I’m excited, and I’m looking forward to it.”
