NASHVILLE, Tenn. —- Nine home games including contests against 2006 NCAA tournament teams Tennessee and Kentucky highlight the 2007 Vanderbilt soccer schedule released today by head coach Ronnie Coveleskie.
The Commodores will play five teams that made the NCAA tournament a year ago.
“I am very excited about our 2007 schedule,” said Coveleskie. “It will prove to be very challenging for our young team. I am looking forward to watching our team compete against such talented teams this fall.”
VU will open the season with a home exhibition contest against Virginia Tech on Friday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m.
They will then begin the regular season at a tournament in Athens, Ga., against Wisconsin and Texas Tech the weekend of Aug. 31 and Sept. 2.
The September schedule also includes a road contest against UAB and home games against Tennessee Tech, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. The Commodores will close out their non-conference slate against Davidson and the College of Charleston (host) at its tournament in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
VU will open its Southeastern Conference portion of the schedule with matches on the road against Alabama (Sept. 28) and Auburn (Sept. 30). The team finishes off a four-game road swing with games at Florida (Oct. 5) and South Carolina (Oct. 7).
The Commodores will play their SEC home opener against Georgia on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. and will then host in-state rival Tennessee on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. They will also host LSU and Arkansas the next weekend before traveling to Ole Miss on Oct. 25 and hosting Mississippi State on Oct. 28.
VU will close out the regular season at home against Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
The SEC tournament begins on Nov. 7 in Orange Beach, Ala.
