WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team will tee off at the 2007 NCAA Championship on Wednesday, May 30, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

First-year Head Coach Tom Shaw’s Commodores placed fifth in the NCAA West Regional last week to earn a spot in the national event. That performance included a school-record 267 during Saturday’s final round that propelled Vanderbilt from 11th place into this week’s field.

Senior Luke List, junior Billy Whalen, sophomores Jon Curran and Tyler Matthews, and freshman Hudson Johnson again make up the Commodore lineup this week. Curran just missed a school record in placing second at the NCAA West Regional after shooting a pair of 65’s on the final two days.

List, who is competing in his final collegiate event this week, is the only Commodore with experience at the NCAA Championships. As a freshman in 2004, List’s ninth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional helped propel the Commodores to the national event for the second consecutive year.

Vanderbilt will also be looking to some new faces this week. Whalen, who transferred from Arizona last season, has emerged is recent weeks as one of the team’s most consistent competitors. He fired a seven-under 65 in the final round of the West Regional to finish in the Top 20 of the 141-player field.

Johnson carded his second under-par score of the season at the West Regional, going five-under on Saturday to help the Commodores advance. Johnson played his way back into the starting lineup after only competing in one spring tournament during the regular season.

Matthews was the fourth Commodore to shoot the lowest score of his career in the West Regional. He has represented the Commodores in four of seven spring events after posting a Top 20 finish in his only fall tournament.

The 30-team field will compete for three days (54 holes) before being cut to the low 15 teams for Saturday’s final round. On Wednesday, the Commodores will tee off from the 10th hole at 7:20 a.m., paired with Florida State and Duke.
