NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt was named the No. 1 national seed in the 64 team NCAA baseball tournament field in an announcement televised by ESPN today.
The Commodores will host No. 2 seed Michigan, No. 3 seed Memphis and No. 4 seed Austin Peay in the Nashville Regional at Hawkins Field set for June 1-4.
Vanderbilt will take on fourth-seeded Austin Peay at 7 p.m. on Friday, with Michigan and Memphis set to play earlier in the day at 2 p.m. that day.
Less than 100 general admission tickets are available for purchase on-line through vucommodores.com or through the Vanderbilt ticket office located in the McGugin Center. The ticket office will open at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The Commodores are 51-11 on the year after sweeping the Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament titles. They have been on top of the national rankings for 14 of the last 15 weeks, including nine straight weeks heading into NCAA play.
Michigan is 39-16 overall and earned an at-large bid from the Big Ten conference. They were the regular season conference champions with a 21-7 league mark.
Memphis is 36-25 on the year and finished fourth in Conference USA with a 12-12 league record. The Tigers reached the semifinals of the C-USA tourney before falling to eventual champion Rice.
Austin Peay is 39-20 and earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the Ohio Valley Conference tournament over the weekend. Like Vanderbilt, they won their league regular season championship as well with a 19-8 league mark.
NOTES: Vanderbilt has a 43-18-2 all-time record against Austin Peay, the No. 4 seed in the Nashville regional whom the Commodores will play in the opening round of the regionals Friday night at 7 p.m. This year, Vanderbilt swept a home and home series with Austin Peay, winning 8-0 in Nashville on Feb. 27 and taking a 4-1 decision April 4 in Clarksville. Vanderbilt has a 18-19 all-time record against Michigan, which is the No. 2 seed in the Nashville regional. The two teams met twice in the NCAA Regionals last season with Vanderbilt winning 5-2 and 5-4 respectively. Vanderbilt owns a 15-14 all-time record against Memphis, the No. 3 seed in the Nashville regional. The two teams have not met since 2001, when Vanderbilt beat the Tigers 10-6 in Nashville.
