TEMPE, Ariz. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team earned a bid to the NCAA West Regional Championship, May 17-19, at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course, the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee announced Monday.
Under first year Head Coach Tom Shaw, the Commodores are returning to the NCAA Regional for the fourth time in school history. Vanderbilt missed the field a year ago, though then-junior Luke List participated in the event as an individual.
“I think this says a lot about our entire year,” Shaw said. “Competing in the toughest region in the country, our guys really stepped up and played their way into this field. The team is extremely pumped up about the opportunity to take on another challenge.”
The top five seeds in Vanderbilt’s region are Stanford, UCLA, UNLV, Southern California and East Tennessee State. A total of 141 golfers make up the field of the regional event, including 27 teams (of five golfers each) and six individual competitors.
Eight squads from the Southeastern Conference earned postseason berths, including two teams who were sent to the West Region — South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Georgia (East) and Alabama (Central) both earned No. 1 regional seeds. Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and Mississippi rounded out the SEC’s selections.
The 10 best teams and two low individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA National Championships, May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
