Elliot Hood, a reserve offensive lineman who started six games at right tackle for the Commodores last year, has decided to conclude his collegiate career.
Hood, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., informed Vanderbilt Head Coach Bobby Johnson of his intentions last week just before the university closed for Spring Break. Hood will continue his studies, and expects to earn an undergraduate degree in May.
“For the last four years, my life has been about me and about football. It’s time to think of others,” Hood said. “I have developed an extended family with Vanderbilt football, but I realize it’s time to be with my own family back home.”
Hood played 28 games in his Vanderbilt career, alternating between offensive guard and tackle. When offensive captain and All-SEC tackle Brian Stamper was lost during the 2006 season with a back injury, Hood stepped into the starting lineup, playing with a painful shoulder. Hood started six games at right tackle, playing each game until the shoulder pain forced him out of the lineup. Hood underwent surgery after the season to repair the shoulder injury.
Johnson paid tribute to Hood, especially for his willingness to sacrifice for the team last year. The coach said Hood’s effort served as an inspiration to all associated with the Commodore team.
“I can’t say enough about how much Elliot meant to our team. He never was 100 percent healthy, but he knew the team needed him to contribute. I’m proud to say Elliot played as hard as he could,” Johnson said.
“We’re going to miss the energy and enthusiasm Elliot brought to our team, but we’re also very supportive of his future plans. Elliot’s parents were as supportive of this team as two parents could possibly be. Elliot and his family will always be a part of this program,” Johnson said.
The Commodores hope Stamper’s return for a fifth season will lessen the blow of Hood’s departure. In January, the NCAA granted a medical redshirt to Stamper, a three-year starter and 2005 All-SEC performer who missed most of the 2006 season with a back injury that required surgery.
Thomas Welch, a redshirt sophomore who began his Commodore career at tight end, will also get a close look this spring at offensive tackle. Welch saw action at tackle in four games last year after switching positions when Stamper was lost for the season.
