WBB: ‘Dores Draw Third Seed at SECs

Feb. 25, 2007

DULUTH, Ga. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team has earned the third seed in the 2007 Southeastern Conference Tournament, which begins this Thursday, March 1, at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Head Coach Melanie Balcomb’s Vanderbilt squad will be the last team in the tournament to take the court on Friday, March 2, at 9:30 p.m. CT, against the winner of Thursday’s finale between sixth-seed Mississippi State (17-12, 7-7 SEC) and 11th-seed Florida (8-21, 2-12).

A win on Friday would pair the Commodores with second-seeded Georgia, seventh-seeded Kentucky or 10th-seeded Arkansas on Saturday night.

Vanderbilt’s 10-4 conference record ties for third with LSU (24-6), but the Commodores (24-5) own the head-to-head tiebreaker by way of their 68-58 victory last week.

The Commodores’ 10 conference wins tie a school record set during the 2004-05 season, when the Dores were also the third in tournament. Vanderbilt has finished in the SEC’s top three of seven occasions, and has won the SEC Tournament four times, most recently after tying for fourth place in the league — and being seeded sixth — in 2004.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s action will be televised by FSN South, with Sunday’s championship airing on ESPN2.
