LAX Welcomes Defending Champions Sunday

Feb. 24, 2007

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 19th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team plays host to defending national champion Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the VU Lacrosse Complex. Admission is free to the 1 p.m. CT match.

The Commodores opened the season on Monday, dispatching Albany by an 18-5 tally. Junior Margie Curran and sophomore Cara Giordano each scored four goals in the contest, both filling out hat-tricks in the opening 15 minutes as Vanderbilt took a 10-0 lead.

Sunday’s game will be the first American Lacrosse Conference contest for both teams.

Northwestern dropped its season opener at then-No. 4 North Carolina, 9-8, in double overtime last Saturday. In the previous two-plus season, the Wildcats have only lost two games.

Last season in Evanston, Northwestern defeated Vanderbilt, 14-9. But the second half of that contest was largely controlled by the Commodores. In the game’s final 25 minutes, Vanderbilt outscored Northwestern, 8-4.

Six preseason All-ALC selections will take the field Sunday, including Curran and teammate Sasha Cielak.
