NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 1 Vanderbilt will open its portion of the Music City Classic Friday against Pittsburgh at 4 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores will face Ball State on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Boston College at Noon to wrap up their portion of the Classic.
This is the sixth year of the tournament that also features Belmont and Lipscomb facing the same trio at their fields.
Vanderbilt, 7-0 on the year, leads all the teams from Middle Tennesse with an 11-4 all-time record in the Classic.
Pittsburgh is 0-3 on the season and making its second appearance in the Classic. Last season they went 2-1 with wins over Lipscomb and Belmont and a 2-1 loss to Vanderbilt. The Panthers will start righthander Paul Nardozzi (0-1, 9.00 ERA) against Vanderbilt ace David Price (1-0, 3.00 ERA) on Friday.
Ball State is 0-3 on the year and making its first appearance in the Classic. The Cardinals played the Commodores in a three game series last year with VU winning two of them. BSU will start righthander Ryan DeGeeter (0-1, 9.00 ERA), while the Dores will counter with righthander Nick Christiani (1-0, 3.09 ERA). Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 5-1.
Boston College will open its season tomorrow against Belmont under new coach Mikio Aoki. The Eagles return seven position starters from last year’s team that went 28-25. BC is making its second appearance in the Classic after going winless in the field in 2005. Righthander Nick Asselin will start on Sunday for the Eagles, while VU will counter with righthander Brett Jacobson (2-0, 0.77 ERA). The Commodores hold a 2-1 all-time advantage over BC.
Season tickets are sold out, but people can still purchase single game tickets for $1 through the month of February via the Vanderbilt ticket office (615) 322-GOLD.
