DALLAS – Vanderbilt sophomore third baseman Pedro Alvarez was named the Pro-Line Cap National Hitter of the Week by The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) today based on his hot start at the Houston College Classic over the weekend.

In three games against nationally-ranked opponents at the Minute Maid College Classic, Alvarez batted 7-for-14 (.500) with two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI in the Commodores three-game sweep of the field. Alvarez 2-for-5 with three RBI in VU’s win over No. 1 Rice on Friday. He followed that performance with a 3-for-4 day, including a homer and two RBI against No. 12 Arizona State. The New York City native closed out the tourney with two more hits against No. 20 Baylor on Sunday. He was named to the Classic’s All-Tournament team along with centerfielder David Macias.

This is the second time Alvarez has picked up National Player of the Week plaudits in his two years at Vanderbilt.

The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Vanderbilt plays 18 of its next 20 games at home starting with a three-game series against Ohio this weekend. Single game tickets during the month of February are only $1. Game times are at 4 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
