NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt senior guard Caroline Williams earned first-team honors as a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV women’s basketball team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
Williams is one of four players from the Southeastern Conference, and among 44 nationwide, who are eligible for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team.
A native of Rockmart, Ga., Williams is a sharpshooter who leads the nation’s best three-point shooting team. She averages 12.1 points per game for the 14th-ranked Commodores while connecting on 49 percent of her long-range efforts — best in the SEC and third nationally
A Human and Organizational Development major, Williams carries a 3.6 GPA and is scheduled to graduate from Vanderbilt’s Peabody College of Education this spring.
The Academic All-America® Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Three previous Commodores have been lauded at the national level — Michelle Palmisano (1995, 1996, 1997), Zuzi Klimesova (2001, 2002) and Julie Powell (1994) — while Hillary Hager (2004) and Angela Gorsica (1997) each received regional commendation.
The 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team will be announced the week prior to the SEC Tournament.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
