SEA ISLAND, Ga. — Vanderbilt senior Luke List won the first hole of a playoff to take medalist honors at the 2007 Jones Cup Invitational, played on the par-72, 7331-yard layout of the Frederica Golf Club.
“This is another huge win for Luke,” VU Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “The Jones Cup features the best field in amateur golf, and this is just one more reason for Vanderbilt to be excited about the upcoming Spring season.”
List and Kansas senior Gary Woodland both finished the three-day, 54-hole event at 10-under-par. Woodland led the first two days of the event, but a seven-under performance on Sunday by List allowed the Ringgold, Ga., native to reach the lead.
With List trailing Woodland by two entering the day, both competitors went three-under on the front nine Sunday. A double-bogey on the 13th brought them even, and List took his first lead by parring the 15th hole.
On the final hole of the tournament — a 535-yard par-5 — Woodland sank an eagle to jump back into the lead before a List birdie forced an extra hole.
The Jones Cup was first contested in 2001 as a prelude to the 38th Walker Cup Match. The event brings together many of the finest amateurs from the United States and abroad for three days of competition and camaraderie.
