NASHVILLE — Junior outfielder Ryan Davis’ two-run homer in the third sparked a four-run inning as the 2007 Vanderbilt baseball team went on to defeat the Alumni team 6-2 Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

Junior first baseman Brad French led off the third with a single through the right side setting up Davis’ homer to right off of Alumni starter Jensen Lewis. Back to back doubles by juniors David Macias and Alex Feinberg made it 3-0. Feinberg later scored on a Pedro Alvarez single and throwing error to make it 4-0.

The Alums rallied back with a two-run fifth to make it 4-2. Third baseman Tony Mansolino led off with a double down the leftfield line and then scored on shortstop Ryan Klosterman’s single to get the Alums on the board. Second baseman Warner Jones’ RBI single then cut the lead to 4-2. The former Commodores then loaded the bases with hopes of extending the rally. The threat ended though when the team failed to score on a wild pitch by reliever Nick Christiani and a runner was thrown out at first to end the inning.

The 2007 squad added two more runs in the seventh to make it 6-2. Alex Feinberg’s RBI double to left was the big hit in the inning.

Sophomore Nick Christiani came on in relief in the fifth to pick up the win. He struck out five in 3.1 innings and did not allow a run with four walks. Junior David Price started the game and gave up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings. Senior Casey Weathers came on in the ninth and struck out the side to end the game.

Feinberg led all hitters with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Klosterman, Antoan Richardson, Warner Jones and Tony Mansolino recorded a hit each for the Alums.

Jensen Lewis was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Vanderbilt will open its regular season slate on Friday, Feb. 9 against Rice in the first game of the Houston Astros College Classic. The Commodores will take on Arizona State and Baylor in the tournament as well.
