MADISON, Wisc. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team (2-2) will be looking to defeat top ranked Stanford (1-0) at the ITA Team Indoors tournament at the University of Wisconsin Thursday morning.
Stanford is currently riding an 87-game dual-match winning streak and will be trying for a fourth consecutive Indoors title.
The match, scheduled to begin at 9 am CST, will be the first since the Commodores dropped two contests last weekend to No. 29 Michigan and No. 4 Notre Dame.
“Playing Stanford first is really the best thing for us right now,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said. “To see that level of competition will be a great experience for our players.”
Vanderbilt will be the only SEC team represented at the tournament this year, which is famous for its extremely fast indoor courts and competition. Other competing schools include No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 5 Miami, No. 6 Georgia Tech, No. 7 North Carolina and five other squads in the ITA’s Top 20.
Fish Still Benched With Minor Injury
Vanderbilt’s No. 1 singles competitor Amanda Fish will likely remain benched for the ITA Indoors tournament due to a minor ankle injury that occurred shortly after the Vanderbilt holiday break.
“She’ll be coming with us to Wisconsin, but I’m not sure she’s there yet,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said of Fish.
No. 26 Fish earned ITA All-American honors at the end of the spring season in 2006 and finished the fall season 12-3 but has only seen limited practice time in 2007.
No. 24 Freshman Newman Looks to Improve Undefeated Streak
Vanderbilt’s freshman Catherine Newman remains undefeated in singles and will look to improve the record Thursday at the ITA Indoors Tournament.
No. 24 Newman (3-0) finished the fall season with a 14-1 record that included a win over No. 7 North Carolina’s top singles player Jenna Long, who is currently ranked seventh in the nation. This season Newman has notched victories over opponents from No. 22 Michigan and No. 4 Notre Dame.
Newman will have a chance to improve the record Thursday when the Commodores will play top ranked Stanford at the ITA Indoors Tournament at 9 am CST.
