SAN DIEGO (AP) – U.S. PGA Tour rookie Brandt Snedeker had trouble remembering a round he will never forget at the Buick Invitational on Thursday.
Snedeker flirted with golf’s magic number until the birdies dried up on the North Course at Torrey Pines, then settled for a 61 to tie the course record and take a two-shot lead.
“The whole front nine was a blur,” he said.
Starting at No. 10, Snedeker didn’t make a par until his eighth hole, and was 9 under for his first nine holes. He added a birdie on the par-5 first hole by lipping out a 10-foot eagle, and had a 3-foot birdie on No. 3 that would have put him 11 under through 12 holes. But he missed that, and didn’t have another good look at birdie until the 10-footer he made on his final hole.
Charlie Wi was at 9-under 63, one shot ahead of John Senden.
Tiger Woods eagled the par-5 ninth and 18th holes on the North Course for a 66, and even he was swept up in Snedeker’s round. Woods played two groups ahead of him, and, walking toward the first tee, noticed a scoreboard that showed the rookie at 8 under through seven holes.
“We thought it was a misprint,” Woods said.
It was for real, even though Snedeker couldn’t believe it. The only part easy to digest was that it came on the North Course, where the top 45 on the leaderboard played their opening round. Next up for Snedeker and Woods is the South Course, which will host the U.S. Open next year.
“Maybe it will sink in tonight,” Snedeker said. “I play that bear tomorrow, and then it will really hit me.”
