DULUTH, Ga. — The No. 14/11 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team steps out of Southeastern Conference play Sunday to face Georgia Tech during the Russell Athletic Shootout at the Gwinnett Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT for the game, which will be broadcast live by FSN South.
This will be the first of two visits to the Gwinnett Center this year for the Commodores, who will return to Duluth in the first week of March for the 2007 SEC Tournament.
Both teams are looking to rebound from tough Thursday losses. Vanderbilt (16-3, 3-2 SEC) is playing in the Peachtree State for the second time this week, after suffering its third setback of the season at the hands of No. 16 Georgia, 83-71.
Georgia Tech returns to its home state after a rough trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., where the secondranked Tar Heels defeated the Yellow Jackets, 78-31.
Senior Carla Thomas took sole possession of ninth place on Vanderbilt’s all-time scoring list, passing former Commodore and WNBA star Sheri Sam. Thomas has scored 1,549 points in her career as a Commodore.
Senior Dee Davis stands only six assists away from reaching the school record of 673 career assists, currently held by former Commodore Ashley McElhiney.
Sunday’s game marks Vanderbilt fourth road contest in its last five games. The Commodores return home this week to face in-state rival Tennessee before taking back to the road for a pair of away contests at Arkansas and Kentucky.
