COLUMBIA, S.C. — The No. 14/12 Commodore women’s basketball team looks to return to its winning ways on Thursday, traveling to face Southeastern Conference rival South Carolina for the first time this season.

Vanderbilt, which won 14 of its first 15 games before stumbling at Ole Miss over the weekend, was off to its second-best start in school history. The Commodores were outrebounded in that contest, 47-27, and gave up 36 second-chance points to the Rebels. Now they face the SEC’s best rebounding team (+11.6 rebounding margin) on the road in a hostile environment.

The Commodores are led by an experienced trio of seniors. Point guard Dee Davis leads the Southeastern Conference in assists, with the help from one of the league’s top scorers — forward Carla Thomas — and one of the nation’s top shooters — guard Caroline Williams.

The Gamecocks counter with a bevy of upperclassmen, including seven seniors on their roster. USC’s balanced attack features only two players averaging more than 20 minutes per game and no one player scoring in double-figures.

Vanderbilt has won the last four meetings between the schools, including a pair of wins last season. Overall, the Commodores lead the series, 16-5, but only hold a 5-4 advantage in Columbia.

The Commodores and Gamecocks will meet in Nashville on Sunday, Feb. 18.
