Vanderbilt’s bowling team narrowed the gap but is still ranked second nationally according to the latest poll conducted by the National Ten Pin Coaches Association.

The Commodores, 28-4 on the year, trail defending national champion Fairleigh Dickinson by just eight points after receiving seven of the 19 first place votes. Vanderbilt had trailed FDU by 39 poll points in the November poll but won 22 of its last 23 matches heading into the holiday break.

“The polls are an interesting snapshot of what coaches were thinking at a given moment of time,” says Commodore Coach John Williamson. “I’m sure everyone has their own opinion of what the rankings should look like and because of that they make for good conversation in bowling circles. However, as a team, we don’t place a lot of emphasis on them; we certainly didn’t when we weren’t ranked and we don’t see it any differently now.”

Vanderbilt won two of the three tournaments it entered during the fall portion of its schedule and resumes play Jan. 19-21 at Central Missouri’s Ozark Invitational.
