ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Six members of the Vanderbilt men’s golf team prepared for the upcoming Spring season by taking part in the 81st-annual New Year’s Invitational at the St. Petersburg Country Club.
Sophomore Jon Curran led all Commodores at the event, placing third with a four-day score of 10-under. Defending champion Luke List, a senior at Vanderbilt, placed fifth, just one stroke behind Curran.
Freshman Hudson Johnson and sophomore Tyler Matthews both placed in the tournament’s Top 20. Johnson came in 13th at one-under, while Matthews’ one-over was good enough for 17th place.
“It bodes well for this semester that we have four guys in the top 20 against a field of outstanding amateur golfers,” Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “Most of the field consisted college players that they will compete against this year. It should give us some early momentum as we enter our championship season.”
Freshman Chris Rockwell and junior John Ebert rounded out the Commodores in the event, placing 44th and 78th, respectively, in the field of 109.
The 72-hole event was played on the St. Petersburg Country Club’s par-72, 6,718-yard layout.
