Vanderbilt puts its three-game win streak on the line Saturday when No. 25 Georgia Tech visits Memorial Gymnasium for a 4 p.m. tip off. The contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
Saturday’s matchup marks the third game in five days for the Commodores (4-3, 0-0 SEC). Vanderbilt rallied past cross-town foe Lipscomb, 59-50, on Thursday. Senior swingman Derrick Byars led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Junior forward Ross Neltner added 13 points and six rebounds.
Byars and Neltner have shown great consistency in helping the Commodores climb above .500 for the season. Byars is shooting 50.0 percent from the field (20-of-50) and 47.1 percent from 3-point range (8-of-17) during the win streak while also averaging 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Neltner has scored in double figures in each of the last five games while averaging 15.6 points and shooting 70.0 percent (30-of-43) from the field.
Georgia Tech (6-2, 0-1 ACC) has lost two of its last three since opening the season with five consecutive victories. The Yellow Jackets haven’t played since dropping a 90-82 decision at Miami in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener. Tech is currently led by sophomore guard Lewis Clinch who averages 18.0 points. He is shooting 57.5 percent from the field (50-of-87) and 48.9 percent from 3-point range (22-of-45).
Vanderbilt leads the overall series 37-31 and has won the last five home meetings with the former SEC member. Tech won last season’s matchup, 76-67, in Atlanta on Jan. 3.
