Lady Vols score in final seconds of overtime to claim the win

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Kylee Rossi’s goal in the 100th minute of overtime lifted Tennessee to a 2-1 win over Vanderbilt in SEC soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Regal Soccer Complex.

Rossi’s goal, her fifth of the year, came in the final seconds of the first overtime period off of assists from Kristen Doukakis and Ali Cristoph.

The win moved the Lady Vols to 8-4-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the SEC, while the Commodores suffered their first overtime loss in three years to drop to 8-3-5 on the year and 4-2-2 in conference play.

“It was a tale of two halves,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “They did a nice job of disrupting our rhythm in the first half. In the second half we did a great job of regaining possession and put up a great half. We really felt that we had the momentum and gained confidence as the game went on. We had some great looks, but unfortunately ran out of time. I think that allowed Tennessee to regroup and regain the advantage in overtime.”

UT took a 1-0 lead at the 11:16 mark in the first half when Emily Redberg scored off a direct kick and header cross from Jordan Falcusan and Mick Ingram.

The lead held until just over 12 minutes left in regulation when Amy Wilcox scored her second goal of the year off an assist from Kari Boersma to tie the game at 1-1.

The Commodores took offensive control in the second half with an 11-5 shot advantage after UT had a 10-7 shot lead in the first period.

Tyler Griffin made seven saves in the game, including two in overtime for VU, while Tennessee’s Sarah Kitchin stopped six shots in the win.

Rossi led all players with six shots, including four on goal. Meredith Kohn had five shots, three of them on goal, to lead Vanderbilt.

The loss was the first in a regular season overtime contest since falling to San Diego, 1-0, in the 2003 campaign. Since that time, VU had gone 5-0-14 in extra time.

The Commodores will return to Nashville and close out its regular season home campaign on Friday at 7 p.m. against Ole Miss. The team will honor five seniors: Kari Boersma, Monica Buff, Tyler Griffin, Lea Lafield and Susan McAleavey prior to the contest.
