Amy Baumann’s second goal of the game wins it in OT ATHENS, Ga. — Amy Baumann scored both of Vanderbilt’s goals, the second coming in the 98th minute of overtime to lift the Commodores to a 2-1 win over Georgia in SEC soccer action Friday night at the Turner Soccer Complex. Baumann’s bending shot came from the right side and went past the diving Bulldog goalkeeper at the 98:30 mark in overtime. It was her fourth goal of the season, doubling her previous season high. “This is a fantastic win,” said ecstatic Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie after the game. “Our offense was high pressure, high pressure, high pressure. Amy Baumann was very aggressive tonight.” The Commodores improved to 8-2-5 overall and 4-1-2 in SEC play, while the Bulldogs fell to 7-7 on the year and 2-5-0 in conference action. Baumann scored her third goal of the season in the 20th minute to give the Commodores a 1-0 lead that they held into the half. The score came when Susan McAleavey’s shot attempt was deflected back to Baumann who then kicked it in on an empty net as Bulldog keeper Michelle Betos had come up to try to make the save. VU held a 10-8 shot advantage in the first half with six of them on goal. UGA’s Carrie Patterson tied the game in the 69th minute, as she took an assist from Cortni Joyner and scored her eighth tally of the year from 12 yards out as the ball deflected off of goalkeeper Tyler Griffin and into the net. Lea Lafield and Sarah Dennis both had point-blank opportunities to score late in the second half for Vandy, but were denied by goalkeeper Michelle Betos as the game went into overtime. Vanderbilt held a 7-5 shot advantage in the second half, with Georgia controlling most of the period with a 7-1 corner kick advantage. Tyler Griffin finished with six saves for the Commodores, while Michelle Betos made a career high eight stops for the Bulldogs. “Georgia played very well,” added Coveleskie. “They did a fantastic job of disrupting our attack.” The Commodores will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Knoxville to take on in-state rival Tennessee at 1 p.m. CT. “I think Tennessee and Vanderbilt both view this game as must-win situations,” Coveleskie said. “UT is a very athletic team.” VANDERBILT 1 0 1 – 0 GEORGIA 0 1 0 – 0 Goals: VU- Amy Baumann 2 (4), UGA- Patterson (8). |
