The Commodores improved to 7-2-5 overall and 3-1-2 in the SEC, while the Gamecocks dropped their second straight conference game to fall to 9-5-1 and 3-2-1 in league play. The win was the 50th for Vanderbilt’s Ronnie Coveleskie as the Commodore head coach. VU improved to 11-1-1 all-time against South Carolina and are now in a tie for second place in the SEC East with Tennessee with 3-1-2 league records. “We scored a great first goal,” Coveleskie said. “The girls deserve a lot of credit for being in attack mode today. Our girls did a great job of taking advantage of their opportunities in the second half. I am really proud of them.” Megan Forester fed Amy Wilcox who laid a perfect cross that Amy Baumann headed in for the game-winner. It was Baumann’s second goal of the season. Lea Lafield iced the game with two goals in the final 10 minutes to make it 3-0. She notched her first goal in the 82nd minute then took a feed from Amy Wilcox to tally another one in the 86th minute to close out the game scoring. The senior from Dallas, Texas, now has six goals on the year, a new career high besting last year’s mark of five. “Anytime you get three goals you know that you have played really well offensively,” Lafield said. “Our offense really clicked today and that is something that we really needed.” Goalkeeper Tyler Griffin had to leave the game in the 37th minute after she banged her head in a collision with South Carolina’s M.A. Foster. Erin Horan came in and closed out the scoreless first half. Griffin returned to the lineup at the start of the second half and closed out the shutout, the team’s seventh of the year. The Commodores held a 9-6 shot advantage at halftime, and finished the game with a 16-10 lead.
