OLE MISS VS. VANDERBILT
October 7, 2006
Post-Game Quotes

Vanderbilt Head Coach Bobby Johnson

Opening Comments
“We had to work hard to lose that one, and we did. We just made too many mistakes. We had too many opportunities that we wasted and squandered. We gave them too many short fields and opportunities to score. Other than that, we played extremely good defense, gained a lot of yards, and ended up scoring 10 points.”

On Vanderbilt dominating the game statistically
“We dominated the game. When I looked at the stats sheet, I couldn’t believe it. Looking at the stats, I would never think we would lose that game. The odds are in your favor when you look at the sheet.”

On the loss
“We just made too many critical errors at key times. They did a good job of taking advantage with what we gave them. We couldn’t get the ball in the end zone. They played great defense when it counted. They made some big plays and created turnovers.”

Vanderbilt Wide Receiver Earl Bennett

On the disappointment of the loss
“It’s very disappointing. We came out and we executed the entire game. We just made a couple of mental mistakes. That set us back pretty far. I’ll take the win instead of the yards any day.”

On a new quarterback in the second half
“Mackenzi (Adams), me and all the receivers have been working out since the summer. It wasn’t too hard to get on the right page, because we take reps in practice (together). I feel like he came in composed and played a pretty good game.”

On the game-ending interception by Ole Miss
“We were all involved in the scheme, but once Mackenzi reads the coverage he knows where to throw the ball. They were playing cover two, and I think they had a spy robber. That caught (Adams) by surprise. But he did play a heck of a game for this to be his third time getting in.”

Vanderbilt Tailback Cassen Jackson-Garrison

“We just made way too many mistakes to win the game. You can’t be in the red zone that many times and either fumble the ball or throw an interception. We have to change that. We have to play more soundly and perform a lot better if we want to win games.”

On how a game like this affects you
“You can’t let a loss bring you down. You have to look forward to the next game. You can’t really worry about the loss now, there’s nothing you can do about it. A game like this just makes you realize you have to come out and work harder.”

Vanderbilt Defensive Tackle Theo Horrocks

On where this game rates as far as frustration
“I would put this near the top. It was a smash-mouth game. It just didn’t come out our way today.”

On dominating the game defensively
“We just have so many guys that are flying around making big plays. We just have guys beating blocks and running to the ball. It’s so much different than it has been in the past.”

On the team’s attitude after 14-0 deficit
“It really didn’t get too bad. (Ole Miss) scored 14 points so quickly, so we knew we had a lot of time to make that up. We just decided for the rest of the game not to give up any more points and let our offense get rolling.”

Vanderbilt Defensive End Chris Booker

On losing such a tough game
“Each loss hurts the same. It’s hard to say one loss hurts more than the other, because it’s a loss. We just have to come back and figure out what we made mistakes on and fix them for the next game.”

On rebounding for the next game
“It’s football. You’re going to have wins and you’re going to have losses. One of the hardest things you have to do, especially when you’re young, is shake the last loss off. We just have to get ready for Georgia. This was a tough loss for us.

On the team’s attitude
“We feel that we could have won this game and that we should have won this game. Coming into it, we felt that we were going to win it. We gave our best, we just came up short. Stat-wise, you can have 1200 yards, but if you don’t put it in the end zone, you could hold their offense to negative yards, but all that matters is the points. The defense
needs to outplay their defense.”
