10/1/2006 Goalkeeper Tyler Griffin becomes new school record holder for career shutouts The Commodores now stand at 6-1-5 overall and 2-0-2 in conference action, while Auburn earned their first draw of the season to stand at 7-3-1 and 1-2-1 in the SEC. “Today was a very frustrating day. When you produce 31 shots like we did and don’t walk away with any goals, it is frustrating,” VU head coach Ronnie Coveleskie said. “We worked hard and we had some good looks on goal. We as a team understand that coming away with ties is not going to help us come NCAA selection time.” Amy Baumann led the offensive attack with seven shots, including a near miss with 10 seconds left in the first overtime. Katie Schulz, who totaled four shots, also had a close call with one minute left in the second period, but Auburn goal keeper Allison Whitworth came through with a save. “The thing is that we are playing well in many respects. We produced some good looks but right now we are just not finding a way to win.” Coveleskie said. Despite the draw, Tyler Griffin kept the Tigers scoreless to set a new Vanderbilt career shutout record of 29. Griffin also notched three saves in Sunday’s contest. “I’m excited and thrilled for Tyler and I’m thrilled that the team helped her get this record today. I am very happy about the individual accomplishments. But what I am not very happy about is the team result. We need to do a better job of finishing and getting the ball into the back of the net,” Coveleskie said. Vanderbilt’s defense held Auburn to just eight shots, with several key blocks by freshman Megan Forester. “Auburn is a team that was ranked in the top-15 in the nation just a couple of weeks ago,” said Coveleskie. “Sundays are hard in the SEC. You play on Friday night, practice on Saturday and then have to turn around and come right back out and play again. But it is tough on everyone. Everyone has the same challenge in that regard so that cannot be an excuse for us.” The Commodores will finish out their four game homestand next Friday with Florida and then South Carolina on Sunday, October 8. |
