HEAD COACH BOBBY JOHNSON

On Marcus Buggs’ Third Quarter Touchdown:
“That play really got us out of the doldrums. It was a big momentum changer and gave us a little breathing room. Marcus really did a great job of getting his foot down for the touchdown.”

On TSU’s Antonio Heffner:
“We were trying to account for him. They do a good job of using his talents. He’s got a very fine arm.”

On the instant replay reviews:
“I like the system. We need to get it right, that’s the bottom line. I never argue with a replay call. I think they do a good job with it.”

On the team’s first win of the year:
“We are happy, no doubt about it. It’s fun to win, but it’s hard. You have to execute and beat the other team. We did it, and they are thrilled about it. When you haven’t won it seems like every mistake you make on the field is magnified. That was happening a little in the second quarter. So, we settled down and played the second half much more relaxed.”

On the historical significance of the game:
“We talked about the significance of the game before hand. But I really liked TSU because I knew they’d be fired up about it. They really played hard.”

VANDERBILT PLAYER QUOTES

JONATHAN GOFF

On getting pressure on the quarterback on the play that resulted in Buggs INT for a TD:
“I came in on a blitz and just tried to get a hand out and get a hand on the ball. Luckily, I was able to make a play right there.”

On the ability of the defense to force turnovers deep in the TSU end of the field:
“It changed the whole momentum of the game. And once we had the momentum, we were able to take advantage of it and take control of the game. We really were able to take control of the game after making some plays on defense.”

On getting the first win of the season:
“This win is big for us because it is the first win of the season. During the last two games we were right there in both of them, but both of them still went down as losses. So this first win is huge for us.”

MARCUS BUGGS

On his third quarter Interception for a touchdown:

“I just saw it in the air so I grabbed it. It just popped into my face and then I just wanted to make sure that I was in bounds.”

On the VU defense forcing turnovers:
“Our defense today came up huge for us. The fact that we were able to force a couple of turnovers just changed the whole game.”

On beating cross-town rival Tennessee State:
“This game was really all about bragging rights. A lot of us over here know a lot of them over there and so this will make for some really interesting conversation. We’ll be able to have the upper hand on that.”

EARL BENNETT

On his third quarter TD catch:
“It felt really good to get into the end zone. But I am more concerned with us winning than with me catching the ball. So, whatever it takes for us to win is okay with me.”

On VU’s defensive effort:
“Defense and special teams played great for us tonight. They gave us a lot of really great opportunities tonight, and fortunately we were able to take advantage of them and turn them into points on the board.”

On using this win as a launching pad for the rest of the season:
“Hopefully, this will really get us rolling. Hopefully, this will allow us to keep progressing as we move deeper into the SEC season. It always feels good to win, and hopefully we can carry this winning feeling with us.”

On the team’s goals for the season:
“Our main focus is still going to a bowl game. That is still our number one priority and that is still a very attainable goal so we need to keep working and keep progressing.”
