9/22/2006 Vanderbilt sophomore Jacqui Concolino carded a 2-under par 70 and is in second place following first round play at the NCAA Fall Preview in Daytona Beach, Fla. The three-day event is being held at the LPGA’s International Legends Course (Par 72, 6,315 yards). Concolino, who is three shots behind Tennessee’s Nicole Smith (5-under par 67), made a wild recovery after her first eight holes. The Orlando, Fla. native recorded four birdies and an eagle for a six-stroke swing from 4-over par. “That’s the mark of a great player,” said Vanderbilt head coach Martha Richards Freitag. “Jacqui got her mind in the right place and found a way to turn it around.” The Commodores, ranked 19th in the latest Golfweek magazine poll, shot a 14-over par 302 as a squad and are in fifth place entering play Saturday. Georgia posted a 1-over par 289 for first place. Four Southeastern Conference schools make up the top five, including second-place Auburn (298) and third-place Tennessee (299). Arizona State (300) is fourth. The 18-team field includes 12 nationally ranked teams. Commodore senior Chris Brady and freshman Brooke Goodwin are tied for 35th following a 5-over par 77. Junior Liebelei Lawrence and senior Kristen Svicarovich each posted a 6-over par 79 and are tied for 58th. “Our effort is there,” Freitag said. “We’re hitting the ball well. We just need to get the ball in the hole. “The back nine got just about every team today. There were some tough hole locations and windy conditions that made club selection tricky.” The Commodores begin second round play Saturday at 7:45 a.m. CT.
