NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Senior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week after recording two shutouts last week at the Saint Mary’s Fall Classic in California.

Griffin recorded a save in a 1-0 win over Saint Mary’s last Thursday and capped that off with an overtime shutout against No. 14 California, 0-0, on Saturday. She made three saves as Cal had an 11-4 shot advantage during the contest.

She has recorded three shutouts in the Commodores six games this season and now has 26 in her career, and needs three more to move past Christy Barringer’s (1992-95) school record of 28.5. She has a 0.60 goals against average on the year.

This is the second conference weekly award of Griffin’s career and first this season for the Commodores.

Vanderbilt (2-1-3) starts a brief two-game homestand this Friday against UAB at 7 p.m. at the VU Soccer Complex. They will then host Middle Tennessee on Sunday at 2 p.m. before beginning conference play on the road next weekend.
