9/7/2006 MORAGA, Calif. — Susan McAleavey’s second goal in as many games proved to be the difference in Vanderbilt’s 1-0 win over Saint Mary’s College at the Saint Mary’s Fall Classic tournament Thursday afternoon at Garaventa Field. The Commodores won for the second straight time to improve to 2-1-2 on the year, while the Gaels fell to 1-4 overall. McAleavey’s goal came at the 25 minute mark in the first half on a penalty kick. It was her second straight game with a goal as she now leads the team with six points on the season. She had two shots on goal to lead the team with Amy Wilcox also recording a shot on goal in the game. Megan Forester had two shots in the game as well as the trio combined for five of the team’s six shots. The Commodores had to play a man down throughout the majority of the contest as Katie Schulz was called for a red card with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The game was a physical affair with Saint Mary’s called for 17 fouls, including two red cards and a yellow, while Vanderbilt had eight fouls and Shulz’ red card as well. “It was a physical game that was not managed by the referees very well,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “I told the kids that this game will go down as one of their most outstanding wins because of they way the battled throughout the match, especially with a man down for three quarters of the game.” SMC only had one shot on goal the entire game as senior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin recorded her second shutout of the season and the 25th of her career. The Commodores will wrap up the California swing against No. 14 Cal (4-0-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Garaventa Field. The Bears defeated Air Force 3-1 in the early game of the tournament.
