Commodores pick up first win of the season

AUBURN, Ala. — Vanderbilt rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two goals in the final 25 minutes, including the game-winner from Amy Wilcox with just under three minutes remaining to lead the Commodores to a 3-2 win over No. 22 Dartmouth Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Classic.

The Commodores picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-1-2, while the Big Green, ranked No. 22 by Soccer Buzz, fell to 0-2 in their season opening weekend.

“This win was just what the doctor ordered,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “We stated before the game that it was important for us to get a win today and show the intangible ability to compete. We did that and in return our team got a hard earned win.”

VU took a 1-0 lead just before halftime when senior Lea Lafield scored as she beat her defender and blasted a shot from 25 yards out, giving the Commodores a 1-0 halftime lead.

Dartmouth roared back with two goals by Becky Poskin in less than a two-minute span early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. She scored her first goal at the 53:46 mark when she hit a rebounded shot in from a yard out. The second tally came at the 55:38 point when she booted a shot from 10 yards out over the hands of goalkeeper Tyler Griffin.

The Commodores rallied to tie the game with 25 minutes to play when senior Susan McAleavey scored on a header off an assist on a cross from Amy Baumann.

As the game was heading towards the end of regulation and overtime, with just under three minutes left to play, Wilcox took a crossing feed from McAleavey and scored to give Vanderbilt the 3-2 advantage.

“Dartmouth is a good team that provided a challenge for us,” added Coveleskie. “For the third straight week it was very hot and we had to battle through those conditions. We gave up the two quick goals, but our kids did a fantastic job of composing themselves and then came back to score two goals late in the match, including the game winner with three minutes left.”

McAleavey led Vandy with a goal and an assist on three shots on goal, while Lafield scored her team leading second goal of the year. Wilcox, a sophomore, recorded the second goal of her young career and her first collegiate game-winner.

The Commodores will head to California next weekend to take part in St. Mary’s College (SMC) Fall Classic. VU will take on the host Gaels on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT, and will then face Cal on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Saint Mary’s Stadium.
