AUBURN, Ala. — William and Mary’s goal in the first three minutes of the game was the difference in a 1-0 win over Vanderbilt in the first game of the Auburn Classic Friday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

Forward Claire Zemmeck took a feed from Lauren Bowers at the 2:24 mark and put it in goal to give William and Mary the 1-0 advantage. Goalkeeper Meghan Walker preserved the lead with four saves to record the team’s second shutout of the year.

The Tribe improved to 3-0 on the year, while the Commodores fell to 0-1-2.

“We have to figure out how to score goals,” Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie said. “The two things we have to start doing are eliminating mental lapses and we need to get better in the final third.”

The goal was the only shot William and Mary had in the first half as Vanderbilt held a 4-1 shot advantage at halftime. The Commodores out shot the Tribe again, 9-8, in the second half but could not convert on opportunities to tie the game.

“William and Mary didn’t allow us much space to create chances throughout the match,” said Coveleskie. “They were difficult to get behind because they had more players playing behind the ball.”

Goalkeeper Tyler Griffin recorded five saves in the contest, while Susan McAleavey and Katie Schulz both had two shots on goal to lead the Vandy offense.

VU had two shots hit the crossbar and deflect off during the match. Megan Forrester had one in the first half and Sarah Dennis recorded one in the second half.

“We are playing good soccer and are coming together as a team,” added Coveleskie. “I think once we get the offense figured it out, the goals will come and we will get the results that I believe this team is capable of.”

The Commodores will wrap up their tourney action on Sunday, when they face Dartmouth at 11 a.m. at the Auburn Soccer Complex. The Big Green return seven starters from their 12-5-1 team from a year ago and are ranked No. 22 by Soccer Buzz entering this weekend’s play.
