Lea Lafield scores first goal of the season for the Commodores

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt and Denver battled to a 1-1 tie in the final game of the Vanderbilt Classic Sunday afternoon at the VU Soccer Complex.

The Commodores recorded their second tie of the opening weekend to move to 0-0-2 on the year, while Denver moved to 1-0-1.

“We had a fantastic first half and controlled the tempo of the game, but we had no killer instinct to put the ball in the back of the net in the second half,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “I think as a group our new challenge is going to be how to foster that killer instinct.”

Senior Lea Lafield staked VU to a 1-0 lead at the 13:53 mark in the first half when she scored off a crossing pass from Meredith Kohn.

“I thought that was a great three-man combination,” said Coveleskie. “Susan McAleavey played into Meredith Kohn and clipped in a fantastic ball to Lea Lafield, and Lea had some great individual strength on her attack because she was being pulled down and still did a great job finishing the ball.”

Denver’s best chance at a goal in the first half was thwarted at the 29:07 mark when Rachel Fry’s shot to the right side of the net was saved by a diving Tyler Griffin. VU maintained the 1-0 lead into the half.

The Pioneers then tied the game with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation when Caittlyn Rolling took a deflected shot and kicked it in from two yards out.

“We lost sight of a very dangerous opportunity to score against us and in turn we gave up, what I think, was not a great goal,” added Coveleskie.

Both teams had 10 shots and two saves in regulation, with Denver recording the only two shots on goal in the overtime periods.

Tyler Griffin gave up her first goal of the season at the 67:09 mark and finished with four saves in the contest.

Lleane Grimditch had four shots, two on goal, to lead DU, while Meredith Kohn, Susan McAleavey and Monica Buff each had two shots to help lead Vanderbilt.

The Commodores will be back in action next weekend at the Auburn Classic in Auburn, Ala. VU will take on William and Mary on Friday, Sept. 1 at 4:30 p.m., and will then face Dartmouth on Sunday at 11 a.m.
