Vanderbilt Opens Soccer Season with 0-0 Tie

8/25/2006

Tyler Griffin records 24th career shutout with eight saves

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt and Colorado battled to a scoreless tie in both teams season opener in the Vanderbilt Classic Friday night at the VU Soccer Complex.

The Top 25 ranked Commodores and Buffaloes played a physical contest with both teams having a chance to come away with the win.

“I think that we were fortunate we came out of this with a tie,” said sixth-year head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “Colorado had some great looks on goal, they played very well and put us under a lot of pressure and gave us a learning experience early in the season.”

Colorado held the shot advantage in the first half, 8-4, including four shots on goal. The Commodores came out more aggressive in the second half with a 6-5 shot advantage and a more determined style of play. Both teams had a few chances in overtime but could not convert as the game ended in a tie after two OT periods.

Senior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin recorded the 24th shutout of her career and saved eight shots on goal in the contest.

“Tyler came up huge for us in the second half, she was fantastic,” said Coveleskie. “We made some substitutions and brought some players off the bench that made an immediate impact. Meghan Higgins, Brette Healy and Nicole Lukens sparked us. They were players that came in at the end of the first half and got us organized and got us to fight and believe that we can win this game.”

Sarah Dennis and Megan Forester both had two shots on goal to lead the Vandy attack, while Alex Cousins led the Buffaloes with four of her own on the night.

“We were really capable of winning this game,” added Coveleskie. “I think tonight we got caught on our heels in the first half and we came out in the second half as a brand new team.”

The Commodores will be back in action Sunday afternoon against Denver at 2:30 p.m. The Pioneers defeated Alabama, 4-0, in the first game of the Classic Friday evening. Colorado will play the Crimson Tide at noon Sunday, prior to the VU contest.
