Football Preseason Camp Report- 8/17/06

8/17/2006

On Campus with the Commodores (Aug. 17) — Looking to break the monotony of preseason camp while giving more of a game feel to practice, Head Coach Bobby Johnson split the Commodores’ workout between the Rich Practice Facility and Vanderbilt Stadium.

For just the second time in camp, the Commodores spent an hour on the stadium turf. Johnson put the team through a 45-play situational scrimmage that featured contact but no tackling. Before going to the stadium, the squad worked an hour on position drills, special teams, team teaching and 1-on-1 drills.

Afterward, Johnson continued to praise the preseason effort of his Commodores.

“We’re working hard to improve,” Johnson said. “The enthusiasm of this squad, their desire to work hard and get better, has been very good throughout camp. This was another one of those practices. We didn’t tackle, but we still got after it pretty good as a team.

“Our guys have been very coachable, willing to listen and work the way we want them to. We are getting better, one practice at a time,” Johnson said.

Quarterbacks Chris Nickson, Mackenzi Adams and Richard Kovalcheck took turns running the Commodore offense during the stadium scrimmage. Nickson opened the session with a 30-yard pass to Jared Hawkins and later hit George Smith for a touchdown. Adams and Kovalcheck guided possessions inside the red zone.

On defense, defensive ends Steven Stone and Curtis Gatewood, and tackle Gabe Hall earned tackles for loss, while Darlron Spead and D.J. Moore knocked down connected pass attempts.

Corbin Watches Practice
Commodore Baseball Head Coach Tim Corbin couldn’t get enough of the football practice, watching the opening practices at the Rich complex, then walking to the stadium to catch the last hour.

Back in Nashville after leading Team USA to a 28-2-1 record and its second consecutive FISU World Championship in Havana, Corbin was congratulated by Coach Johnson and other members of the coaching staff during the practice break.

“I enjoy watching Bobby’s squad practice and how they go about their business,” Corbin said. “Maggie (Corbin’s wife) kept me informed about how practices were going, but I really wanted to come out and see for myself. These guys do such a great job.”

Corbin guided Team USA to its best summer record ever, concluding the tour and worldwide tournament with a 18-9 title-clinching victory over Chinese Taipei. His national squad included three Commodore standouts — pitchers David Price and Casey Weathers, and third baseman Pedro Alvarez.

Upcoming Schedule
The Commodores are expected to practice twice Friday, then work out in the stadium for a third time Saturday before taking Sunday off.
