Lively Scrimmage Ends Tuesday Session by Commodores

On Campus in Nashville (Day 13) – The Commodores staged one of their most spirited full contact drills of the preseason at the conclusion of practice Tuesday.

Several players expected to have roles in the Commodore offense used the 40-play scrimmage to make an positive impression on coaches. The offense produced three touchdowns in seven drives, displaying its most balanced attack of the preseason.

Head Coach Bobby Johnson liked the effort from both offensive and defensive units. It looked like we were getting after each other, and I thought all of the running backs did a good job. Overall, the offense was just more aggressive, especially up front. We had some mental lapses, on both sides of the line, but we’ll work to get that corrected, he said.

The Commodores returned to the John Rich Practice Facility Wednesday morning in limited gear for two hours of individual instruction, special teams work, and team teaching. The squad is expected back at practice Wednesday evening, their third two-a-day session of the preseason.

With starting tailback Cassen Jackson-Garrison missing the practice, a trio of young tailback prospects did their best to show coaches they merit playing time. Redshirt freshman Jared Hawkins enjoyed his finest practice to date, quickly hitting holes opened by the interior front. Hawkins had three rushes for more than 12 yards, including a touchdown from 21 yards. Freshmen Gaston Miller and Kennard Reeves both ran effectively, with Miller twice bouncing off hard hits to gain extra yards. Reeves’ best rush was a 14-yarder off tackle.

Quarterback Richard Kovalcheck and Mackenzi Adams displayed throwing accuracy and ability to lead the offense. Both guided scoring drives, throwing touchdowns in the process. Freshman Steven Goulet was on the receiving of both touchdowns a 20-yarder from Adams and 19-yarder from Kovalcheck.

Redshirt freshman receiver Justin Wheeler continued to show excellent hands in traffic. Early in the session, Wheeler stretched out to haul in a Kovalcheck pass, then maintained possession after a jarring tackle by another youngster who has impressed in camp, freshman safety Brent Trice. Among the others with receptions were redshirt freshman receivers Larry Simmons and Alex Washington, and freshman tight end Jonathan Massey.
