Vanderbilt rising senior Kristen Svicarovich upset Alabama’s Jenny Suh 4 & 2 in first round match play Wednesday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur in North Plains, Ore.

Svicarovich, seeded No. 52 in the event,  led throughout most of the competition in defeating the No. 13 seed Suh. Tied after the first hole, Svicarovich earned a quick three-hole advantage by parring the second and third holes and carding a birdie on the fifth hole. She later shot par on No. 10 and No. 16 to solidify the margin of victory.

A native of nearby Hillsboro, Ore., Svicarovich advances to face Jennifer Osborn of Arizona State today. Tee time at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club is set for 10:50 a.m. CT.

Svicarovich  qualified for match play and earned her seeding after shooting a two-round 7-over par 149 in stroke play competition earlier in the week.

Svicarovich has enjoyed success previously at Pumpkin Ridge, finishing runner-up in the 2005 Oregon Amateur.

The Commodore also qualified for the 2004 U.S. Amateur in Eerie, Pa., where she made the cut but did not win the match play event.

Svicarovich is a steady performer for Vanderbilt, having played in every tournament for the Commodores during her three years. She has twice qualified to compete in the NCAA Championship finals, including her 2005 performance that tied for 16th place.
